Step 0: Commit to seeing this through.

Mindset is what will get you to the finish line. Don’t underestimate the importance of committing to completing this course, seeing yourself as an expert and doing the work.

I’ve seen this happen where people are really excited and have brilliant ideas for creating digital courses, and then they freeze up or other things start to get in the way of them completing it

Most of us are wearing multiple hats, either as business owners or in our personal lives, we can’t drop everything we’re doing to create a digital course. But as long as you commit and make it a priority, to getting the work done, you will get there.

The next part of step 0 is equally important. Owning your expertise. Mindset will help you fulfill your commitment. There will be times when imposter syndrome creeps in and wants you to give up before you even start. Believe in your abilities and your knowledge. That as long as you are a few steps ahead of who you’re teaching, you are the expert to someone who doesn’t have the knowledge and experience that you have. And it’s okay to know that you don’t know everything. You don’t need to know everything.

Now that we’ve got our mind right we can move on to step 1.

Step 1: Pick Your Topic

the first step, pick your topic, think about the transformation you can provide people through your course. Here’s the thing, people don’t really buy information. Information can be Googled. People can Google “how to” just about anything these days. So you want to think about your course as being a way to transform or deliver some sort of result or help someone do something that they couldn’t do before.

Then you want to make sure that your topic or idea is something people want to buy. I suggest doing a little searching on Amazon, Udemy and Google to see what already exists on your topic. If there are lots of options that proves there is demand. If there’s not much then you’re going to want to dig a bit further to determine if you discovered a gap or if there is just a lack of demand.

Now the next step is my secret to creating a course that basically sells itself.

Step 2: Think Like a Marketer

I want you to think about marketing this course idea that you have before you actually start to go in and make a very detailed outline. And here’s why. I have seen over and over again, people creating brilliant courses, have brilliant ideas. They go ahead, maybe they get even get some beta testers, and then they realize they have no idea how they’re going to market this course or they struggle with marketing the course. And that’s because they created the course without thinking of how they are going to market the course. Think about your marketing now instead of later. Write out a rough draft of your sales page. Think about the objections your ideal customer might have. Think about the challenges your ideal student might face. Let those things help shape your course outline.

Step 3: Test Your Content

There are a few ways you can test your content but ideally once you have a rough draft of your sales page your next step is to put it out there and attract some testers. People who can give you real feedback and help you create a course that is truly transformative. I recommend pre-selling your course. This allows you to recoup some of the money you are investing in creating the course while also allowing you to test your content, collect feedback and testimonials. However, if you do this. You have to follow through. You can’t sell something and not deliver. I recommend creating 20% of your course content. Specifically the first module and then very detailed outline and plan to get the rest of the content done.

Step 4: Tech Set Up For Launching

At this point you have done the two most important steps. Honestly, you can run a beta with limited tech.  Now the first few steps aren’t necessarily as fun as playing around with getting your course setup on Thinkific but these steps are the foundation for your course success. Tech is important but I save for the last step because it tends to be the most distracting from getting your content done. Here’s what I want you to know, I have a tech kit that you can access here. I took all the guesswork out of which tools to use so you don’t have to waste time comparing platforms.
